Film Review - Antz
Here's a real treat! Antz is one of those films where you look at the trailer and say to yourself, "Self" (because that's what you call yourself), this one could go either way. Might be good, or maybe I've just seen every good scene in this picture."
Antz is the former, and after a dreadfully bad summer movie season, it's very welcome.
It is set in an ant colony, where Z (Woody Allen) is having a hard time conforming to the hive mentality. Z tries to get others to do their own thing, but doing the same thing is their thing. Z feels alone. Through mishaps he sees life outside the colony, experiences war, and fails in love.
Sylvester Stallone is very good in a supporting role as Weaver, a soldier ant who learns that the digging the workers do is fun.
Antz is completely computer animated. Not only is the close-up facial work done well, but the scope of millions of ants is fully depicted.
My only complaint with the film has been with the advertising practices of changing one word in the television advertising. If the word is too harsh for TV, then it shouldn't be in the ad. However, changing "anus" to "caboose" in the ad gives the moviegoer the wrong impression of what they would receive for the price of admission.
The action in Antz is going to appeal to kids; the humor is aimed at adults. We have a winner here.
