Film Review - Ghosts of Mars
Oh jeez, what a stink-burger! Whatever you do, stay away from this film!
I thought after Vampires Film Maker John Carpenter had his machine well oiled. I wanted more. As the premiere of Ghosts of Mars beckoned, I kept seeing John Carpenter in interviews talking about how he doesn't like to work hard. That's very apparent in Ghosts.
The primus is stupid. Humans are close to completing the terraforming of Mars. A miner discovers an artifact and calls in the company archeologist. She trips some kind of alarm which wakes up the flesh possessing ghosts.
Once a ghosts takes over your body, you start mutilating yourself and then you go on a killing spree. If you kill a possessed human, the ghost just transfers to the next person. This is so tired and boring.
There's not one real character in this film. You have the "innocent" criminal. The cop who tells the story in flash back. (It gets worse, there are flash backs in flash backs. In fact, once the flash backs were three layers deep!) Pam Grier as the Lesbian Captain of the Police squad, and lots of dumb extras to keep the body count up. The only person in the film that appeared to be able to act was Joanna Cassidy, who played the archeologist.
Really, this film was very dull. We don't really care who dies, because we already know from how the film opened. There's no fun to this movie, and honestly, it wasn't that scary.
Carpenter didn't want to work hard, and his movie is a dud.
