Film Review - Sgt. Bilko
I never watched the Sgt. Bilko television show. It was just a little before my time. From what I've heard, it was a hell of a lot better than this dog.
Steve Martin reprises Phil Silver's character as the corrupt Army sergeant. Bilko runs the motor pool, is involved with gambling on the base, and it's also suggested he is siphoning off Army funds to his own account. Bilko is also a cad. He keeps leaving his girlfriend at the altar.
In any story, you have to build up a sympathy for a character. The audience has to like someone in the story and hope things come out for the best. There's no one in this film for us to like. Even the by-the-book PFC who reports to Bilko in the beginning of the film, has become completely corrupted by the sergeant in the end.
The girlfriend who is always being left at the altar is a schmuck. Not only does she keep after a man who will keep hurting her, she then starts using others to get Bilko, the same way Bilko manipulates people.
Dan Aykroyd as the inept commander of the base ... Enough said, this movie sucks. Rent a Marx Brothers film.
