Film Review - Shrek
Now here's something you don't see everyday - a good movie!
If you ever saw The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show from the 60's you'll remember Fractured Fairy Tales. Now just think of what you would get if you had a movie length Fractured Fairy Tales with computer animation better than Antz. That's Shrek!
What's wonderful about this film is that everything is fair game. Every fairy tale is poked fun at. Even Disney, who used to be the fairy tale factory takes a few hits. It also doesn't hurt that one of the principles of Dreamworks, was fired by Disney.
Shrek is an ogre. He loves his life, the mud, eating worms, scaring people. It's a great life. But then of course the world decides to intrude. Some pint-sized prince decides to get rid of all the fairy tale characters, and shoves them into Shrek's swamp. To get the prince to take all the characters back, Shrek must save a princess so the prince can marry her. Sounds like a fairy tale, eh? Well it's all very twisted. Shrek is the good guy, the prince is the bad guy. So you can guess what happens to the prince at the end of the movie.
This is rip-roaring fun! Whoever decided to cast Eddie Murphy as a jackass, er donkey, was a genius! Murphy and Mike Myers, who plays Shrek, just keep the jokes coming full bore. The great thing about these jokes, is the adults are laughing for different reasons than the kids. So many times we hear that a movie is a "family picture" which usually means the parents need to take Prozac during the trailers. You can take a kid to Shrek but don't feel you have to. This movie is for everyone.
Really, go put down your web browser and go see this movie RIGHT NOW!
